With a workforce of approximately 6,200 full-time, Substitute and Temporary employees, Corpus Christi Independent School District is the second largest employer in the Corpus Christi area.

One of the main goals of the Human Resources Department is to recruit, attract, hire, and retain highly qualified individuals each year to fill approximately 3,260 Certified and Professional positions, and 2,240 Auxiliary positions.

Human Resources also hires and manages approximately 1000 substitute teachers and paraprofessionals filling 300 - 450 employee absences a day.

Although the online application system requests references from everyone - references are required for Certified, Professional, and Substitute Teachers, ONLY. (They are NOT required for Auxiliary or Substitute Paraprofessional positions).

You must have a valid email or mailing address for each of your references. Persons used as references should be your present and/or past supervisors, or principal. Personal references are NOT acceptable. Addresses from outside the US cannot be submitted on the on-line application.

Auxiliary jobs do NOT require references. Although the on-line application allows you to list 3 references, we do not require references for Auxiliary positions.

Substitute Administrators and Substitute Teachers must be referred by a CCISD Principal or Administrator, OR be a retired CCISD Teacher, OR provide 3 professional references (academic professionals, principals, or present/past supervisors). Personal references are NOT acceptable. Addresses from outside the US cannot be submitted on the on-line application.

Substitute Paraprofessionals do not require references.


Can I apply for more than one type of job (certified/professional, auxiliary, substitute)?  Each category of job (certified, professional, auxiliary, and substitute) has its own application, and there are several jobs listed in each of these categories. You can have an application on file for each category, and have applied for more than one job in each category.


What happens behind the scenes when you submit your online application?

When you submit your application online, it is available to HR, all campus Principals, all Department Heads, and other hiring managers across the district.

Depending on the job announcement, an Application Specialist will screen applicants for qualifications. If the job has a closing date, the Application Specialist will normally review all candidates immediately after the closing date. If the job is listed as "Until Filled," the Application Specialist will periodically review all applicants to determine if a sufficient number of have applied. If the job is listed as "Continuous," the Application Specialist will periodically review applicants as necessary.

The appropriate Application Specialist will ensure that applicants meet the basic requirements of the position, will ensure that all required documents are uploaded, will verify criminal background checks. An HR Director will review applicants and forward to the appropriate hiring manager (Campus Principal, Department Head, etc.).

Teaching positions are not normally advertised. As vacancies arise, campus Principals and HR review the pool of qualified applicants for candidates.

Principals, Department Heads, or other hiring managers (across the district) rely on HR to provide lists of qualified candidates, but also review the entire pool of all active applications as they have opening arise. It is important to keep your application current and updated as you obtain new qualifications or credentials.

Principals or Managers select those candidates that are best qualified and normally conduct interviews before recommending a final candidate. The Manager will return that selection to HR, who will manage salary placement and the hiring process.


What are the pay scales, why do the job announcements list minimum and maximum pay, and how is my initial pay calculated?

The pay structures for all positions are established and maintained by daily or hourly base rates to promote consistent treatment of employees who have different work year periods.

A pay grade for each position includes a minimum, midpoint, and maximum rate.

New and current employees hired or promoted to administrative positions must provide evidence of job-related professional work experience at the time of employment in order to be appropriately placed in a pay range.

Transcripts.

We require that original transcripts be provided to Human Resources (if required for your position). We DON'T require that they be mailed directly from the university, or that they are provided in a sealed envelop. You may hand-carry your original transcripts to our office.

Transcripts for Auxiliary positions are required only if hired. Auxiliary applicants who have (or obtain) original transcripts should hold them until they receive an offer of employment.


Certification:  You can get a copy of your current certification from the SBEC web site, http://www.sbec.state.tx.us/ If you are on a standard certificate be sure to enter the beginning and expiration date. If you have a life certificate you will leave the expiration date blank. If you hold an Out-of State Certificate, please attempt to match your information with the choices listed. This link will be helpful to you on obtaining your Texas Certification.


How long is my application active?  Applications will remain active in our system for 2 years from the last time you update it and continuously available to all hiring personnel. If you have multiple applications on file (Certified, Auxiliary, Substitute), each will have its own expiration date. Every time you update an individual application, it is active for 2 years from that date.

How do I know what positions CCISD has available?  All certified positions are advertised on the CCISD web site. Go to Employment, then Human Resources, then Online Job Postings. We accept applications for most certified positions for a specific period of time as shown on the posting.

If I’ve applied for a position before and I see it on the job posting list again, do I need to apply again?  Yes. This is very easily done by login in to your online application, going to Employment Preferences on the left side menu, continuing to the next screen called Employment Positions, clicking Add Position, then selecting from the drop down menu. Be sure to save your application before exiting.

How will I know if I got the job I interviewed for?  The Director for Certified Personnel will call you by phone. Principals and supervisors do not make job offers. Principals and supervisors make recommendations to hire applicants. After HR conducts a background check, qualifications check and certification check, the Director calls the applicant recommended.

Auxiliary Applicant Frequently Asked Questions

What are auxiliary jobs? Auxiliary employees support the District’s mission to develop the hearts and minds of our students by working in:

  • Schools, as paraprofessionals (teachers’ aides), LVNs, administrative assistants, and clerks.
  • Transportation Services, as bus drivers, bus attendants, and vehicle technicians.
  • Facilities and Operations as custodians, laborers (groundskeepers), and licensed trade positions such as HVAC mechanics, plumbers, and electricians.
  • Food Services as cafeteria helpers and central kitchen workers.
  • Administrative Support as administrative assistants, clerks, analysts and specialists.
  • Part-time temporary positions, as tutors and mentors.
  • The above examples are not exhaustive and represent the majority of auxiliary positions within the District.

How do I know what positions CCISD has available? I saw a position advertised yesterday and when I went back today it wasn’t there. Why?   Most auxiliary positions are advertised for a specific period of time which is indicated as the Close Date on the job postings. If the position you saw is no longer listed, most likely the advertising period has ended. If the position shows no closing date, it will be removed from the list when it is filled by an applicant.

Do I have to have an e-mail account to apply at CCISD? No, although it’s strongly encouraged. Free e-mail accounts are available from a number of providers including Yahoo! and Google. E-mail helps us keep in touch with you more quickly and is a good back up to communication by phone.

I’ve applied for many positions with CCISD and have never been contacted for an interview. What am I doing wrong? Most likely, you’re not doing anything wrong. CCISD receives applications from many more applicants than we have auxiliary positions. For example, advertisements for Data Entry Clerk will typically bring over 200 qualified applicants. How quickly will HR call me for an interview? For most auxiliary positions, the campus principal/department supervisor will be contacting applicants and setting up interviews.

How will I know if I got the job I interviewed for? At the conclusion of the interview process, principals and supervisors make recommendations to hire candidates and all job offers are extended by the Director for Auxiliary Personnel. After HR conducts a background check and evaluates relevant experience, the Director calls the candidate recommended and offers the position to him/her.

Is there anything I can do to help improve my chances of receiving an interview? Yes. Please consider the following:

  • Keep your application current. Add additional college hours as completed or any relevant work experience.
  • Make sure your work experience demonstrates your likely success in the specific position for which you are applying.
  • Create and upload a letter of interest for specific positions when you apply.
  • Keep your reference information current.
  • Upload a resume that describes in greater detail what you would bring to a specific position.

My resume is in MS Word. How can I upload it? You can convert your resume to a file type that can be uploaded. Converting to Adobe PDF maintains the look and formatting of your resume. If you do not have access to Adobe, you can save the document in Rich Text Format by changing the “Save File Type” at the bottom of the MS Word save dialogue screen. If you have any trouble when following these steps, you can send your information to HR and we will upload it for you.

The application says to include my work experience. Should I include more than five years? Yes, please include ALL relevant experience. The years of relevant experience are used to determine your initial salary placement.

I hear people talking about “your calendar.” What does that mean? “Calendar” has a number of different meanings in the District. Most often, “your calendar” will mean the number of days per school year that you work, which then determines your first day of work and last day of work each year. For example, most campus-based positions are on a 187 day calendar. For 2013-2014, that means a 187 day calendar employee’s first day of work was August 16, 2013 and the last day will be June 6, 2014.

I am a retiree. Can I be hired into a regular auxiliary position?

If you are a retiree with the Teachers Retirement System (TRS) of Texas, the only regular auxiliary position you can be considered for is Bus Driver. Bus drivers are considered a critical shortage position by both TRS and CCISD.

Retirees may be hired by the District as substitutes or part-time, temporary employees. However, TRS places significant restrictions on how much and when a TRS retiree can work without penalizing your TRS retirement benefits. It is the applicant/employees responsibility to understand the TRS rules and how the rules impact their work and retirement benefits.

If you are retired and receiving benefits from an entity other than TRS, you can be considered for regular employment with the District.
