As a storm approaches, CCISD receives frequent updates from the National Weather Service-Corpus Christi and other authoritative sources providing local forecasts. The meteorologists offer specific insight into what we can expect in the area that includes CCISD properties.

It is not unusual for forecasts to change overnight. District leaders closely monitor current weather conditions and forecasts as well as road conditions. Whenever possible, we try to decide the afternoon or evening before severe weather is expected to arrive, so our families and staff have the opportunity to make childcare arrangements and use their after-hours time to prepare their homes as they deem necessary.

As those of us who have lived in this region for a while know, however, tropical systems, for example, may change overnight. By waiting until the morning of, we can make a decision based on updated forecasts and conditions, thereby ensuring our schools are open whenever possible to serve our students as well as our working families who rely upon us for education, nutrition and a safe environment during the workday.

4:30 a.m.
If the condition of area roads is not readily apparent, CCISD’s Transportation department sends several bus drivers to assess.

5:00 a.m.
Transportation and facilities crews relay their observations, as well as the latest weather and road reports, to the Deputy Superintendent of Business & Support Services, who shares information with the Superintendent.

5:15 a.m.
While our building systems are monitored remotely so quick action may be taken as needed, school custodians arrive at their buildings (if safe to do so) to ensure they are ready to welcome staff and students. They begin clearing debris from sidewalks as needed. Transportation staff arrives to ensure bus routes are ready to run.

5:30 a.m.
In the event of a decision to delay or close, the Office of Communications begins its work of notifying families, staff, and the community. CCISD will begin the notification process by sending a text, call, email, or a combination of the three, via the district’s automated notification system. We then post to the district website and official district social media accounts and share via local media outlets. Updates are shared via the same channels as the situation necessitates.
