Tony Elizondo has a deep love for the Corpus Christi community where he was born and raised. He graduated from Foy H. Moody High School in 1988 before obtaining his Bachelors in Criminal Justice/Social Sciences from Mount Marty College in Yankton, South Dakota, in 1992 where he also played college and semi-pro baseball. After graduating college, Tony enlisted in the United States Army and served for three years. Elizondo returned to Corpus Christi and obtained his Masters degree in Guidance and Counseling from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

Mr. Elizondo has over 20 years of experience working with children and adults. His work has been focused around drop-out prevention, academic success, cultural enrichment, career exploration and delinquency prevention with kids that come from broken homes and are considered “at-risk”.

Tony Elizondo is currently the Vice President of Satellite Operations at Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas where he has worked since 2005. His prior employment includes CCISD, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and Central State University in Wilberforce, OH.


Tony and his wife, Belen, have been married for 18 years. Tony and Belen both attended elementary, junior high, and high school in CCISD District 2. Tony has a son, Joshua, currently serving in the United States Marine Corps and a daughter, Iliana, who currently attends Moody High School.

Catherine Susser is a community volunteer, wife and mother who is a strong supporter of Texas Public Schools. Mrs. Susser holds a BBA in Business and a Masters in Public Accounting from the University of Texas at Austin. She was elected to the CCISD Board of Trustees in November 2014 as the District 4 Representative. She is passionate about the importance of a strong public school system to accommodate our growing community. She believes there is an obligation to the citizens and taxpayers to educate the young people so they are able to enter the work force and become independent, contributing members of our society.

In addition to serving as a CCISD Trustee, Mrs. Susser serves on the Next Generation of Assessments and Accountability Commission and the Texas Commission on Women. She has volunteered in CCISD schools as Windsor Park PTA President, Athenafest Chairman and Yearbook Chairman and has served as a reading volunteer at numerous CCISD elementary schools.  In addition, she was a Destination Imagination Coach for three years and is a Past President of the  the Corpus Christi Charity League.


Mrs. Susser and her husband, Sam, have three children, a daughter who attends The University of Texas at Austin,  and two sons who are at Ray High School and Baker Middle School respectively.

Alice Upshaw Hawkins was born in Robstown, Texas and educated in Corpus Christi.  She received a Masters’ degree in Composition and Rhetoric from Texas A & M University-Corpus Christi and a Bachelor’s of Science in Education from Texas A & I University Kingsville.  She taught in several local school districts including Victoria ISD, West Oso ISD, Corpus Christi ISD, and Flour Bluff ISD before retiring in 2011.   Additionally, Ms. Upshaw Hawkins has taught Freshman Composition at Del Mar College since 2003. Although teaching has been her primary passion and career, she worked in the oil and gas industry at Champlin Refinery (now Citgo) and in telecommunications for Southwestern Bell Telephone (now AT & T).

Dr. Tony C. Diaz has dedicated his life to education. For over 35 years, Dr. Diaz spent his time teaching students in the classroom, leading schools as principal or assistant principal, and taking on various administrator positions in CCISD. Since retiring from the District in 1995, Dr. Diaz remained active filling administrator positions at various campuses across the District. Dr. Diaz is deeply entrenched in the community and has served in various state, local, and civic organizations. Today, he continues to be a member of the Association of Texas Professional Educators Association and the Texas Elementary Principals & Supervisors Association. Most often you will not see Dr. Diaz without his wife, Bessie. The pair has been side-by-side in support of education for over 40 years.

Janie D. Bell  is a community volunteer, who served as the director of the American Diabetes Association for 13 years.  She received her Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin and has been a Corpus Christi resident for 38 years. She was elected to the CCISD Board of Trustees in November 2012 as an At-Large representative.  She recognizes the importance of public schools and the education of our children in order to build a stronger community.

Mrs. Bell is a graduate of Leadership Corpus Christi and has served as chair and/or board member for the Corpus Christi Education Foundation, Catholic Charities, Charity League, Junior League of Corpus Christi, Mayor’s Fitness Council, the Coastal Bend Diabetes Initiative, and John Paul II High School. She is currently serving on the Corpus Christi Symphony Board and has co-chaired "Pops In the Park" for the past 5 years.  She also serves as a Nueces County Coastal Park Board Commissioner. She has been active in several PTAs and Booster Clubs over the past 25 years. 
She is enthusiastic about taking her community involvement to the next level and serving as a board member. Mrs. Bell and her husband, Philip, have four children, who are all CCISD graduates.

Marty Bell, is a product of CCISD, having attended Schanen Elementary School, Tom Browne Junior High School and Carroll High School. After 34 years in the classroom and the gym, the last 18 at his Alma Mater, he retired from teaching and coaching in May 2016. He believes that education determines our vocation and always stresses to students, “Come to school every day, on time, with your supplies and ready to do your best.” He promotes parent involvement in their children’s education, especially the importance reading to their children at a very early age to help them become successful learners. 

Coach Bell graduated from Texas A&M University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education, and he earned a Master of Science in Educational Technology from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in 2004.  

As a CCISD educator, Coach Bell served as the vice-chairman of the CCISD District Advisory Team and co-chairman of CCISD’s Consultation Committee. He also served on various committees at the campus level which include Carroll High School Library Committee and the Campus Advisory Team. Coach Bell currently works part-time at St. John Paul II High School as the Boys Head Basketball Coach. 

Coach Bell started serving his community at an early age as an Eagle Scout and continued to give his time and talents to church and various community organizations.  

John Longoria

John Longoria was elected to the school board in November 2006 to represent District 1 and reelected to a second term in 2010 and to a third term in 2014.  Mr.  Longoria helped lead efforts to pass bond programs in 2008, 2010 and 2014 that led to the construction of 8 elementary schools and the building of the new Veterans Memorial High School and Dot Adkins Middle School. He is a big supporter of academics, athletics, teachers and parent involvement. He financially supports many student clubs and assists individual students. He encourages parents to put their children to bed early, get them to school on time everyday, and assist them with their homework 30 minutes a day. 

Mr. Longoria was a former Corpus Christi City Councilman from 1995-2003. He served as a board member for the Corpus Christi Housing Authority, the Del Mar College Foundation, and the Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority. He is a current member of several school PTA organizations and has served as a PTA President. 


Mr. Longoria earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Texas A&M University in College Station and a Master of Business Administration degree from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. He and his wife Sonia have three children, all of whom attend CCISD schools.
